Vienna has a mild week ahead. Highs will be near 70°F on Wednesday and in the low to mid-70s after that, with cool nights in the mid-40s to near 50°F. Saturday will feel cooler, near 63°F. This mild stretch is a good time for one simple job: check your heating vents.
Why Blocked Vents Make Rooms Feel Cold
Warm air can only heat a room if it can get into the room. Supply vents bring the warm air in. If one is closed, or blocked by a sofa, rug, or long curtains, that room may stay cool while other rooms feel fine. Return grilles let air flow back to the system, and blocked returns can also make airflow weaker, so heat spreads less evenly. Do not close several vents to push more heat into one room — that can work against your system. A quick walk through each room can find these problems before colder nights arrive.
You do not need special tools, and it takes only a few minutes per room. Keep this check on the surface only: do not remove grilles, reach inside the ducts, or open any equipment panels.
Steps to Check Your Heating Vents
Here are the steps to check your heating vents:
- Walk through each room. Find the supply vents, usually on the floor, wall, or ceiling, and keep them open unless your system’s instructions say otherwise.
- Move anything blocking the vent. Shift furniture a little, roll back rugs covering a floor vent, and keep curtains clear.
- Check the return grilles too. Returns are often larger grilles on a wall. Keep them clear of furniture and boxes.
- Wipe dust from the covers. With the system off, use a dry cloth or a vacuum with a soft brush on the cover surface only. Do not pour water into the vent, and do not reach inside it.
- Run a short heat test. Set the thermostat to Heat and let the system start in its normal way. Notice whether air is moving at each vent and whether any room stays much cooler. This is a simple check only, not a full test of the system.
When to Have Your Vents and Airflow Checked
If a vent is fully open and clear but little air comes out, or one room stays much colder than the others, the cause may involve the ductwork, airflow, controls, or another part of the system — have it checked while the weather is still mild.
