Keep the Area Around Your Furnace Clear in Alexandria, VA

Alexandria had a warm Friday, near 77°F, and the weekend turns cooler, near 63°F on Saturday, with overnight lows in the 40s. As nights get cooler, your furnace will run more often. This mild weekend is a good time for one simple safety job: clear the area around your furnace.

Why the Space Around Your Furnace Matters

Your furnace needs the open space around it that its maker requires, with its openings unobstructed and clear room for a technician to reach it safely. Stored items can block those openings and the path to the unit, and flammable products kept close to heating equipment add a separate fire risk.

You do not need special tools. Work only around the outside of the unit. Do not open any equipment panels, and do not move or touch any pipes, wires, or vents connected to the furnace.

Steps to Clear the Area Around Your Furnace

Here are simple steps you can take this week:

  1. Move storage away from the unit. Keep a clear, open space around the furnace. Follow the clearance and access requirements in your system’s manual. If you cannot find them, ask a qualified HVAC technician to confirm what your system needs — do not guess a distance.
  2. Store flammable products somewhere else. Paint, solvents, gasoline, and spray cans should never be kept near a furnace or water heater. Store them away from heat and ignition sources, following each product’s label.
  3. Keep paper, cardboard, and laundry away. These items pile up fast near a furnace and can block its openings. Keep dust and lint from building up around the unit and its openings.
  4. Keep the path to the unit clear. Make sure you — and a technician — can reach the furnace, its shut-off switch, and its filter access point without moving heavy items first.
  5. Look for warning signs while you are there. Check for water on the floor, rust, soot, or a strong unusual smell near the unit. Do not touch or try to fix anything you find. If you smell gas, leave the home right away — do not use light switches, appliances, or a phone inside. From a safe place outside, call 911 or your gas utility’s emergency line, and stay outside until they say it is safe to return. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911 from outside — do not go back in until emergency responders say it is safe.

When to Have Your Furnace Checked

If the area around your furnace is clear but the system makes new, unusual noises, turns on and off again and again, or cannot hold the temperature you set, it is better to have it checked by a professional while the weather is still mild.
