Find and Seal Small Drafts Around Doors and Windows in Fairfax, VA

Fairfax has a mild stretch ahead. Highs will be near 72°F on Thursday and 75°F on Friday, with overnight lows near 43 to 50°F. Saturday will feel cooler, near 63°F. This calm, dry week is a good time for one simple job: check for small drafts around your doors and windows before colder nights arrive.

Why Small Drafts Make Rooms Feel Colder

A small gap may not look like much, but when wind and pressure push air through it, cold air can slip in around a door or window while warm indoor air escapes. Rooms near those doors and windows may feel cooler than the rest of the home, and your system may run longer to keep up. Finding the gaps now, while the weather is mild, is easier than finding them on a cold night.

You do not need special tools. A clean hand and a thin strip of tissue paper are enough for a simple check. These checks can show possible drafts, but they do not measure how much air is leaking.

Steps to Find and Seal Small Drafts

Here are simple steps you can take this week:

  1. Close and lock each door and window. Locks pull many windows and doors tighter into their frames, so check with them closed the way you leave them at night.
  2. Feel around the edges. On a breezy day, slowly move the back of your hand around each frame and feel for cool air moving in.
  3. Check for moving air with a tissue strip. Hold a thin strip of tissue near the edge of a closed door or window. If it moves again and again, air may be moving through a gap there. Check once more to rule out a passing breeze.
  4. Look at the seals. Check the weatherstripping and the seal under each outside door. If it is cracked, flat, loose, or you can see daylight around a closed door, the seal may need repair or replacement.
  5. For minor seal wear, try a simple repair. Choose replacement weatherstripping or a door sweep that fits that door or window well, and follow the maker’s instructions. Never seal or block supply or return vents, exhaust fans, combustion-air openings, or any vent or flue for a furnace, boiler, or water heater — leave any sealing around those appliances to a qualified professional.

When to Have a Draft or Heating Problem Checked

If a door or window does not close fully, is warped, or still lets in a strong draft after a simple seal fix, have it checked. If you find damaged framing, signs of water getting in, or gaps that need trim removed, leave that repair to a professional. And if rooms still feel cold with the drafts fixed, the cause may be in the heating system, airflow, or controls, and it is better to have it checked while the weather is still mild.
