Water heaters rarely fail without warning. They usually complain for weeks first — quietly, in a utility room nobody visits. Catching these six signs early is often the difference between a simple repair and a flooded floor plus an emergency replacement.
1. Rusty or Discolored Hot Water
If rusty water comes only from the hot taps, corrosion is likely inside the tank or the anode rod is spent. The anode rod is a sacrificial part designed to rust so your tank doesn’t — once it’s gone, the tank itself starts to go.
2. Rumbling, Popping, or Banging Noises
Those sounds usually mean sediment has built up on the bottom of the tank. The sediment traps heat, makes the unit work harder, and slowly damages the tank. An annual flush prevents most of it.
3. Water That Runs Hot, Then Cold
Inconsistent temperatures, or showers that turn lukewarm far sooner than they used to, point to a failing heating element, a faulty thermostat, or sediment reducing the tank’s usable capacity.
4. Leaks or Puddles Around the Base
Moisture around the base is never something to “keep an eye on.” A leaking tank does not heal, and internal tank leaks cannot be repaired — the unit needs replacement before a slow leak becomes a burst.
5. Age: 8–12 Years and Counting
Most tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years. If yours is in that range and showing any sign on this list, planning a replacement on your schedule is far cheaper than an emergency call on the coldest weekend of the year.
6. Pilot Problems or Rising Energy Bills
A pilot light that won’t stay lit, or gas and electric bills creeping up with no change in usage, often means the heater is losing efficiency and working overtime to deliver the same hot water.
